VEA presents this award each year to an educator to recognize, reward, and promote excellence in teaching and advocacy for the profession. It also honors public education and dedicated VEA members.
VEA will select one educator from among all Virginia nominees. The winner will receive the VEA Award for Teaching Excellence which includes $500 and recognition at the VEA Delegate Assembly in March 2023. That person will also be Virginia’s nominee for the NEA Foundation Awards for Teaching Excellence.

NEA is offering a series of shorter Praxis Content Sessions to help you study and prepare for your exams. Each day is dedicated to a different exam. All sessions meet virtually for 2 hours from late January-February 2023.

VEA can bring this popular training to you/your school or division as either a 3-hour or a 5-hour workshop. Participants gain a better understanding of how trauma affects our students’ brains as well as learn a few tips on how to better support the students in our care. On Saturday, December 10, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards notified this year’s candidates of their scores on components submitted earlier this spring. We are thrilled to announce that Virginia has 112 newly certified NBCTs, and 324 current NBCTs successfully maintained their certification.

Your responses help us gather information about the current state of National Board Certification knowledge among our members and develop programming and services that meet member needs and add value to union membership. We have the opportunity to build an ESP mentoring program with support from NEA, which aligns with one of the goals of the GPS Fund Grant awarded to our department. Conversations and research over recent months have led us to conclude that starting small is the best strategy. Therefore, applications are being accepted to form a Local team to build a pilot program over the next several months by participating in pre-learning and attending a workshop with other state affiliates May 27-28, 2023. NEA suggest the following team composition:

Teams can include Association members, leaders, committee members, Association staff and managers, school district/university representatives, and community partners.

Teams should consist of individuals who can offer the unique knowledge, skills, experiences, or resources needed for an ESP mentoring program. They should be positioned to advance the project and sustain the goals of the program once launched.  We encourage careful, intentional consideration when building your team. Attention should be given to establishing a team that reflects diversity in ethnicity, gender, age, career, roles, responsibilities, and viewpoints. Please be intentional about including those typically under-represented.
